7 Porn Myths debunked by an Indian Pornstar

Diving into the porn industry, one can’t help but notice the hushed tones that often shroud this subject.

It’s a topic that seems to evoke a complex web of cultural and social anxieties, particularly when considering its implications in the context of South Asian communities.

In an age where the internet has granted instant access to explicit content via the tap of a screen, it’s easy to understand why concerns and apprehensions might run high.

The mere presence of porn can indeed spark a sense of panic.

It’s important to underscore that individuals are entitled to their own perspectives on adult content – to indulge in it or abstain from it is a personal choice.

What does raise concern, however, are the myths and misconceptions surrounding this topic.

In an era rife with conflicting narratives that often vilify adult content, the truth becomes obscured.

Therefore, we spoke to upcoming pornstar Sasha Devi*, who began her adult entertainment career on OnlyFans.

She decided to move towards porn in 2022 and her first three scenes are yet to be published online as she still needs to reveal her lifestyle to her parents.

As a British Asian adult star, she debunked some of the most common myths about porn in order to help remove the stigma around it, especially among British and South Asians.

Her aim is to restore some semblance of clarity to the discourse.

Myth: Porn is full of Sexual Violence

This whole notion that the industry is excessively violent and that we [performers] don’t willingly consent to our actions, can be quite exasperating, you know.

What people often miss is the initial consent given, and the subsequent confirmation of that consent at the end, ensuring everything was consensual.

It’s a part of the process that often goes unnoticed.

In every case, there’s a consent form, and the larger studios typically conduct pre- and post-filming interviews to discuss the scene.

Whilst I’m still starting out, I’ve seen first-hand producers and platforms making sure we are comfortable, particularly when it’s more ‘niche’ activities.

“On set, the cast and crew are genuinely kind.”

However, it’s essential to acknowledge that, like in any other environment, there can be instances where consent boundaries are crossed.

These happen in more ‘amateur’ offices where directors (specifically men), think they’re these big-time idols.

It’s challenging to navigate the world without encountering occasional unpleasant situations.

But generally speaking, people in the industry are quite considerate.

Especially now, where things are more inclusive and more precautions are taken, you feel safer in these environments.

Myth: Flawless Skin is Best

This is the most stupid myth I come across. Not just in porn but in the adult industry as a whole.

Maybe in the 80s or 90s, perfect blonde women with huge tits, bare skin and slim bodies were idolised, but not now.

Many Asian girls will know that our hair is sometimes hard to manage and I wouldn’t be part of an industry that finds disgust in natural bodies.

We, just like everyone else, are perfect in our own unique and imperfect ways.

The pressure to go bare or get a Brazilian wax is not a necessity.

In fact, maintaining some pubic hair has its benefits.

Not only does it offer protection against various infections, but we can also save some money that comes with frequent waxing.

You will see a lot of the big pornstars now donning their pubic hair, curvy bodies and natural faces with pride.

Myth: Women fake their Orgasms

I take great pleasure in enjoying my time on set.

We are there to have sex in a genuine way. All my scenes so far have been amazing and I’ve never faked an orgasm with them.

On a base level, we’re there as two consenting adults who love to f*ck so why would we act like it’s something negative?

I can’t speak for all the pornstars in the world and say none of them have faked an orgasm. Maybe, they have.

But, it’s a myth to say that’s what all women do.

Every individual is unique, and in the world of adult entertainment, it’s essential to remember that it’s a job.

“Just like any other profession, it’s all about your approach.”

You need to understand your own desires, as well as those of your co-star, and work on building a connection.

Also, I would say that a squirting orgasm can never be faked.

Myth: There’s no Longevity in Porn

Ever heard of granny porn? Only joking!

Even though the salary can have its downsides, there are more women (and men) privatising their content.

This means that the stars themselves build up a following of fans who only want to see their work.

Likewise, you build up these followers on OnlyFans, ManyVids, Fansly etc and then if you turn to porn, the same people will watch your videos, ranking you higher and making you in more demand.

And, just like many businesses, it’s about working your way up.

You can’t expect to be paid millions on your first job.

It’s important to understand that there are no royalties in porn. Payment is typically a one-time deal for a shoot.

However, if you produce and sell your content through your own website or platforms, the earnings continue to roll in.

So, you can have a long career in adult entertainment. You just have to be smart about it.

Myth: Penetration is the Key to Orgasm

I think this myth is so stupid that I barely have time to acknowledge it. It’s not so much a porn myth but a myth about sex too.

“Shoving something in a woman doesn’t automatically mean she will orgasm and feel pleasure.”

The majority of women cannot cum from penetration alone, so in porn, that’s why you see a lot of foreplay, dirty talk and changing positions.

It goes back to my point again of knowing your co-star and seeing what they like/dislike.

So, when men think just f*cking a woman in real life means they have to cum – no!

Feel her, know her body, play with her – porn can help in that respect but sex comes with personal responsibility too.

Myth: We become Pornstars because of Trauma/Abuse

No stats or facts back up this myth.

This is a tactic used to discredit our work, labelling us all as “damaged” individuals just because we do something against normal expectations.

Throughout history, society has often stigmatised women who embrace their sexuality, branding them as deviant or mentally unwell.

It’s curious how society places such intense scrutiny on those in the adult industry, while individuals in other occupations are spared from similar levels of inquiry.

Will we begin to question the mental health of Asda employees, for instance?

A lot of people have come up to me in the past saying “You’ve got daddy issues” or “I bet your uncle touched you up”.

At first, it was hurtful because it was a form of bullying. But without those comments, I wouldn’t have the strong mind and exterior I do now.

Myth: You can’t do Porn and be in a Romantic Relationship

There are certain individuals who tend to objectify us and don’t see us as actual human beings with private lives and feelings.

Some may believe that I somehow don’t love or go on dates.

I’ve heard of women going to porn conventions, and being approached by guys who ask them to have sex after they’ve finished.

Then when they say they’re married, have a boyfriend or are dating someone, they get laughed at or aren’t believed.

“Men still think that girls doing porn are single, lonely or just put out to everyone.”

I’m just like your friends, neighbours, or family members, except that I find enjoyment in sharing intimate moments on camera.

I emphasise it’s not as life-altering as some may assume.

There’s a clear difference between having sex with someone as part of our profession and having sex with someone out of love.

It’s not a negative distinction; it’s like the difference between having sex and making love.

There are a lot of pornstars in happy relationships and they still do porn. Heck, some married couples now have met through porn.

So yes, this statement is a myth and not true at all.

In this engaging conversation with Sasha, her insights have unravelled the reality behind the adult industry.

Contrary to widespread beliefs, porn is not a dark and stormy industry, it’s often subject to regulations, consent and collaboration.

Sasha emphasises that pornstars are much like professionals in any other field, striving to produce content that adheres to ethical standards and respects personal boundaries.

Furthermore, the belief that porn inherently objectifies its actors was called into question.

The discussion revealed a different perspective, one in which performers find empowerment in their work, celebrating self-expression free from societal constraints.

In addressing the myths of porn, Sasha has managed to shatter some misconceptions.

She hopes debunking these porn myths will help achieve clarification around porn and break down the taboo associated with such an industry, especially in the British and South Asian diaspora.
