Teen killed in Birmingham City Centre in 'Case of Mistaken Identity' f

An inquest was told that Muhammad Hassam Ali died after sustaining an unsurvivable stab wound to the chest in Birmingham city centre.

After being rushed to hospital, Muhammad died three hours later.

Police were called at around 3:30 pm to reports of a stabbing in Victoria Square on January 20, 2024.

The teenager was treated at the scene before being taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital. He died at 6:41 pm that same day.

An inquest into Muhammad’s death opened on January 29.

It was heard that the Pakistan-born victim was a student from Perry Barr.

According to a post-mortem, the provisional cause of death was a stab wound to the chest.

Proceedings were adjourned as the police’s criminal investigation is still ongoing.

Muhammad’s body has now been released back to his family for a funeral to take place.

Louise Hunt, the Senior Coroner for Birmingham and Solihull, said:

“The sad circumstances of this death are such that it was a violent death and therefore an inquest is required.

“Today I’m just going to deal mainly with who has died because the case will need to be adjourned pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.”

Reading a statement from investigator Karen Jones, Ms Hunt said:

“This confirms the deceased’s full name is Muhammad Hassam Ali. He was born in Pakistan and was a 17-year-old student living in Perry Barr in Birmingham.”

Ms Hunt provided details of the circumstances surrounding Muhammad’s death:

“West Midlands Police were called to Victoria Square, Birmingham city centre, to reports of a male having been stabbed.

“Police and ambulance arrived and sadly discovered that the deceased had been stabbed.

“He was treated at the scene and taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital where they tried to save him.

“Despite all the efforts of the medical team his injury was unsurvivable and he died, sadly, at 6:41 pm on January 20.”

“A post-mortem examination was undertaken by a forensic pathologist.

“The provisional cause of death has been provided as a stab wound to the chest.”

A 15-year-old has been charged with murder and possession of a bladed article.

The inquest was adjourned to allow the criminal prosecution to be pursued. No date was set concerning any inquest.

Ms Hunt added: “I am satisfied that Muhammad can be released to his family for his funeral.

“I would like to take this opportunity to offer my condolences to his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”
