Shreyas Talpade suffered a heart attack, reportedly whilst filming in Mumbai.

The actor was rushed to hospital on December 14, 2023, and underwent an angioplasty at Mumbai’s Bellevue Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said: “He was admitted late in the evening and the procedure happened at around 10 pm.

“He is now doing fine and should be discharged in a few days.”

Although Shreyas is recovering, heart attacks among Indian men under 50 are unfortunately rising.

According to the Indian Heart Association, 50% of all heart attacks in Indian men occur at 50 or younger.

Most incidents happen due to artery blockages or cardiac arrests, where the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops pumping.

Shreyas Talpade was reportedly jovial on the set. He had completed some action sequences.

He went home when he complained of uneasiness. Shreyas then passed out.

Dr Mohammed Rehan Sayeed, Consultant at Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, said:

“What we don’t realise is that regardless of the amount of plaque deposited in our arteries, they can cause a problem anytime.

“Sometimes smaller clots may be non-threatening but once they are dislodged and tear the arterial wall, blood clotting happens turning them into a huge blockage in no time.

“It’s like some bushes on the sidewalk which just sit there on a normal day but get uprooted easily in squally weather and stop traffic flow on the roads.”

Although the reason for Shreyas’ heart attack is not known, Dr Sayeed said people need to be aware of certain triggers.

He said: “Studies have shown that we are genetically predisposed to developing cardiac problems a decade earlier than our Western counterparts.

“Cardiac problems in Indian adults develop in the early to mid-40s and hence they are at a greater risk of experiencing angina or cardiac arrest.”

Indians’ bodies also tend to contain low-density lipoprotein and triglycerides. This is partially due to diet as many foods are high in cholesterol.

Dr Sayeed explained: “This is because of certain enzymatic deficiency and not just dietary habits.”

Things get more complicated with conditions like diabetes and hypertension as well as lifestyle management issues.

Dr Sayeed says: “A vast majority of the population has a sedentary and unhealthy lifestyle from a very young age which again puts them at a risk of many health issues and hidden cardiac problems.

“Any sudden changes such as starting vigorous physical activities or HIIT (high-intensity interval training) and gymming may exacerbate the hidden cardiac conditions.”

Dr Sayeed stated that identifying heart attack symptoms is usually late because the signs are often non-specific.

When it comes to tests to take, normal ECGs may not be effective in determining artery conditions.

According to Dr Sayeed: “A CT-coronary angiogram showing low calcium score and less than 30% blockages is an indication of low or minimal risk of Coronary artery Disease (CAD).

“That’s why heart screening is important.

“Also, determining your diabetes status is one of the best ways to keep CAD at bay.”

“Furthermore, if there is a family history of cardiac problems, it is highly recommended that you undergo regular master health check-ups, beginning as early as your 20s.”

Indian men in their 40s and 50s should go to the hospital if they experience shortness of breath and episodes of near loss of consciousness.

As well as making dietary changes, moderate exercise and weight management should be mandatory.

Dr Sayeed added: “Eat in moderation. Small-sized meals (about six a day) may help you maintain your metabolism and weight.”
