Neil Patrick Harris’s Netflix comedy Uncoupled which debuted in 2022 to positive reviews wouldn’t return for a second season. Here’s a look at why it may have been cancelled.

  • The eight-episode first season of the comedy series premiered on Netflix on July 29, 2022.
  • In Uncoupled, Harris plays a gay man in his mid-forties adjusting to life on his own in New York City after being abruptly dumped by his partner of 17 years.

Uncoupled is a Netflix original romantic comedy series conceived and written by Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman. The eight-episode first season of the comedy series debuted on Netflix on July 29, 2022.

In Uncoupled, Harris plays a gay man in his mid-forties adjusting to life on his own in New York City after being abruptly dumped by his partner of 17 years. The series is helmed by Darren Star who is best known for Emily in Paris, Sex and the CityMelrose Place, and Younger.

Uncoupled received overwhelmingly positive reviews. As it is expected from every series that it will come back with more seasons, Uncoupled is no exception. However, with this one, fans are uncertain whether the show will be revived for a second season.

You won’t need to worry, as this article will walk you through everything you need to know about the future of this controversial series.

Uncoupled Season 2 Renewal Updates

Despite receiving great reviews, Uncoupled Season 2 has been cancelled. This makes Uncoupled the fifth significant Netflix Original to be cancelled in 2023 including biggies like 1899 and Inside Job.

Following its premiere on July 29, 2022, the Neil Patrick Harris-starring series had just one entry, at #6, in Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings. Late last year, rumours that Netflix might not renew Uncoupled began to circulate after it was learned that the show’s creator, MTV Entertainment Studios, was looking for a new home.

Deadline reported a plan to move the series to Showtime or another Paramount Global network, but those plans ultimately fell through.

Why Netflix cancelled the series after just one season?

Netflix generally cancellation calls after analysing the viewership data. It relies on factors like hours watched, and the number of viewers who completed the series.

The show didn’t feature in the Netflix global top 10s for a single week between July 31 and August 7. Uncoupled had just one entry, at #6, in Netflix’s weekly Top 10 rankings and that too in its sixth week.

According to TelevisionStats.com – the show rose to become the 6th most popular show in the world on August 3rd (4 days after its launch) but steeply declined after that. Just a month later, it’s dropped to #214, indicating that it may not have enough energy to get a new season. It is understandable that the numbers were not enough to go ahead with a second season.

What was expected from Uncoupled Season 2?

In the series, Harris plays a gay man in his mid-forties adjusting to life on his own in New York City after being abruptly dumped by his partner of 17 years.

At the end of the season, Michael returned home to learn that Colin is actually regretting getting divorced, which had caused all of these problems in the first place. Will Michael think about giving their 17-year-old romance another go?

On the other hand, Stanley recently received a stage one breast cancer diagnosis and is still undergoing treatment. Given that Kai abruptly left the meeting, there is still a lot of uncertainty over his father.

Darren Star told TVLine, “that he anticipates plenty of friction in the writers’ room over how to proceed.”

Who is the cast?

Uncoupled revolves around the lives of Neil Patrick Harris’ newly single Michael. Therefore, if there is a season two, he will almost certainly return. Apart from him, check out the following main cast members of the show:

  • Neil Patrick Harris
  • Tuc Watkins
  • Tisha Campbell
  • Marcia Gay Harden
  • Emerson Brooks
  • Brooks Ashmanskas
