Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy caused controversy by stating that “it’s about time” a woman shaped a Star Wars film.

The Pakistani-Canadian filmmaker began as a documentarian before going on to direct two episodes of the Marvel series Ms Marvel.

She is now set to direct a new Star Wars film centred around the character of Rey, with Daisy Ridley reprising her role.

The movie will be set after the events of Star Wars – Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker as Rey builds a new Jedi Order.

Sharmeen’s film, which has been written by Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight and is rumoured to be titled either Star Wars: A New Beginning or Star Wars: New Jedi Order.

Speaking to CNN, Sharmeen hinted at a feminist-focused film.

She said: “I’m very thrilled about the project because I feel what we’re about to create is something very special.

“We’re in 2024 now, and it’s about time that we had a woman come forward to shape a story in a galaxy far, far away.”

However, her comments did not go down well on social media, with many claiming “woke culture” would ruin the film.

It also resulted in a 2015 interview resurfacing.

At the Women in the World Summit, host Jon Stewart asked:

“What is the balance of activating a force for change, but also trying to permeate that patriarchy, that power structure, and is that a part of the calculation of your art as well and what’s been the reaction to that.”

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy replied:

“I like to make men uncomfortable, I enjoy making men uncomfortable.”

“It is important to be able to look into the eyes of a man and say, I am here and recognise that and recognise that I am working to bring something that makes you uncomfortable and it should make you uncomfortable because you need to change your attitude.

“And it’s only when you’re uncomfortable, when you’re shifty when you have to have difficult conversations that you will perhaps look at yourself in the mirror and not like the reflection and then say, maybe, there is something wrong with the way I think or maybe there is something wrong with the way I am addressing this issue.”

Sharmeen was announced as director in April 2023.

Sharing her excitement in a post, she said:

“I have always been attracted to the heroes journey and the world definitely needs more heroes!

“The blueprints of the heroes we see on screen are rooted in reality.

“I’ve spent my life meeting real-life heroes, who have overcome the most oppressive empires and battled impossible odds and that to me is the heart of Star Wars… which is why I was attracted to the promise of a new Jedi Order.

“And why I’m particularly excited about being immersed inside a Jedi Academy with a powerful Jedi Master.”

The Star Wars film is expected to be released in 2026.
