Nimona 2: The American computer-animated science fantasy adventure comedy film might be back with a sequel. Here’s everything we know so far!
The Nimona movie has had a lengthy and transformational journey, much like its namesake. Before its spectacular Netflix debut, the animated film, adapted from the same-named graphic novel by its creator ND Stevenson, underwent years of tumultuous development, changed studios, and nearly perished at the hands of Disney.
Although there are many differences between the graphic novel and the film, there are also many similarities. It tells the tale of Nimona, a shape-shifter who aspires to become a Ballister Blackheart, the kingdom’s recently crowned villain, as his sidekick. Together, they expose The Institution’s corruption, which it had claimed was there to protect everyone.
Debuted on Netflix on June 30, 2022, the movie received overwhelmingly positive reviews. It currently has a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes from 65 reviews, and a 94 percent audience score. Many fans of the animated movie are eagerly speculating about the possibility of a sequel, Nimona 2.

Nimona 2: Is it happening?
Following Nimona’s June 30 release and the tremendously favourable reviews it garnered, many fans of the animated film are avidly speculating about the possibilities of a sequel, Nimona 2. However, as of now, Nimona 2 has yet to be officially announced to move forward.
The animated film concludes with Nimona’s return, and though her face isn’t revealed, the ending is joyous. Naturally, this does not exclude Nimona from receiving a sequel. The fate of a sequel, Nimona 2, is largely determined by the first film’s popularity. The greater the success, the more likely it is to be approved.
Typically, Netflix announces sequels after a few months of a film’s release, based on the viewership numbers. However, the animated sequels are a bit trickier for any streaming company to move forward with.
In the past, Netflix has not created sequels for any of its animated movies, except for one called The Sea Beast released in June 2022. However, Netflix didn’t announce a sequel for it until January 2023. The Sea Beast gained popularity and spent many weeks on Netflix’s list of the most-watched films worldwide.
It means that for Nimona to receive a sequel, it will likely need to achieve a similar level of success and remain in the top ten films for several weeks. Considering the positive buzz and critical reception, Nimona has the potential to secure a sequel.
What will Nimona 2 be about?
Currently, there are no official plot details as not only would the sequel require the streamer’s approval, but there would also need to be time for Stevenson and the filmmakers to come up with a new story idea.
However, according to the previous section, Nimona sacrificed herself to preserve the kingdom, but she eventually returned, revealing herself to Ballister. With The Director no longer alive and Nimona hailed as a hero by the people of the realm, Nimona 2 might follow the shape-shifter as she adjusts to being welcomed.
Moreover, the fact that Nimona’s finale omitted her also raises the possibility that she may have taken a novel form, which may potentially be relevant to the plot of the sequel.
Nimona 2 Release Date
If Nimona 2 gets approval by the end of 2023, we can expect it to release on Netflix by the end of 2025. ND Stevenson, the author of the graphic novel on which the movie is based, has not penned a sequel yet.
Not only would the sequel require an official green light from the streaming service, but there must also be sufficient time for Noelle Stevenson and the creative team to develop a fresh story concept.
Moreover, the animation team will need ample time to bring this new story to fruition. All in all, fans should prepare for a considerable waiting period if Nimona is indeed granted a sequel.
