Lupin on Netflix

Lupin Season 3 premieres on Netflix in 2023. Here’s everything we know about it including its release date, cast, and plot.

  • Lupin Season 2 comprising 5 episodes landed on Netflix on Jun 11, 2021.
  • The filming for Lupin Part 3 started on Nov 19, 2021.
  • There is no official update on Lupin Season 3 release date yet.

Lupin is unarguably one of the big international hits on Netflix. The French mystery drama premiered on Jan 8, 2021, and garnered worldwide acclaim. It emerged as one of Netflix’s biggest international hits of all time with a record viewership. Lupin was watched by over 70 million households in its first month on Netflix, making it one of Netflix’s most popular French shows.

Lupin part 1 ended on a major cliffhanger, paving way for more episodes. Thankfully, the viewers only had to wait a few months for the second part. Lupin part 2 arrived on Netflix on Jun 11, 2021.

Since the second part landed on the streamer, the fans of the thriller series have been waiting for an official update on its next chapter. Well, fans can rejoice as the show will return for more action and drama as announced by lead star Omar Sy on Twitter.

“We can’t hide anything from you,” he tweeted in French and English. “Lupin part 3 is confirmed!”

“We’ll see what Netflix wants to do with this franchise,” Sy told Deadline. “The first bet that we won was to bring this character to life and to create a franchise. The franchise exists and now it’s up to Netflix to see what they want to do with it. We’ll see what they propose, but this is a character that is super enjoyable and who I would take great pleasure in revisiting tomorrow if I can.”

Has Netflix confirmed Lupin Part 3 yet?

Well, the streaming giant shared the exciting news on Nov 19, 2021, when Lupin Part 3 went into production. Netflix’s official Twitter account Tweeted, “Guess who’s back and ready to steal the show? Lupin Part 3 is now in production!”

Besides the update, the streamer shared an image of series star Omar Sy on set in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower clearly visible in the background.

Lupin Season 3 Release Date on Netflix

Unlike Netflix’s other original shows, the first two chapters were released in two-part of 5 episodes each. The first part premiered on Jan 8, 2021, followed by the second one on Jun 11, 2021.

In an interview with Radio Times, series writer George Kay expressed hope that viewers would see the next season of Lupin in 2022. Here’s what he said:

“We’re actively story-lining with real confidence that that’s gonna happen because the reaction to the first five episodes [of Season 1] would suggest that we’ve got every chance that [Season 2] would be coming next year…unless something goes completely wrong.”

We didn’t get the second season in 2022. However, a brand new trailer and first-look image were released as part of Netflix’s TUDUM event back in September.

It was also confirmed that the third season will premiere in 2023 – though exactly when remains a mystery.  In a Tweet shared by Netflix France, the series was among other titles, including The Witcher season 3, You season 4, and Vinland Saga Season 2 slated for release in 2023.

What Lupin is all about?

Created by George Kay and François Uzan, the series follows professional thief Assane Diop who inspired by a book about gentleman thief Arsène Lupin sets out to take revenge for his father’s suicide.

Lupin Season 3 Cast: Who is returning back?

We are expecting all lead characters to reprise their roles in the next chapter.

  • Omar Sy as Assane Diop
  • Ludivine Sagnier as Claire, Assane’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child
  • Etan Simon as Raoul, the son of Assane and Claire.
  • Antoine Gouy as Benjamin Ferel, Assane’s close friend from his school days
  • Soufiane Guerrab as Youssef Guedira, a detective who uses his knowledge of the Arsene Lupin books to hunt Assan
  • Vincent Londez as Captain Romain Laugier, a police captain
  • Shirine Boutella as Lieutenant Sofia Belkacem, a lieutenant detective

It is still unclear if  Hervé Pierre (Hubert Pellegrini) and Nicole Garcia (Anne Pellegrini) will be back. We may have seen the last of Fargass Assandé as Babakar, Assane’s late father, and Vincent Garanger as Gabriel Dumont, with the Paris police commissioner being arrested for corruption in the finale of the previous chapter.

If Season 3 continues to dig into Assane’s past then we may see more of Mamadou Haidara as young Assane, Ludmilla Makowski as young Claire, Adrian Valli De Villebonne as young Benjamin and possibly Léa Bonneau as young Juliette.

What will be the plot of Lupin Part 3?

Lupin Part 2 concluded with Assane finally getting some closure on his situation with Pellegrini (Hervé Pierre). But it is not the end of their saga, these men still have a lot of battles yet to come. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Omar Sy said that there is a lot to come in future episodes:

“It depends on what’s gonna happen next for Pellegrini and everybody else, and even for him. Because it’s not completely finished. He’s done most of the work, but it’s not completely finished. When Episode 10 finished, there’s still some questions that we didn’t have answered.”

This one will definitely excite you. In an interview with Radio Times, George Kay discussed the potential of Lupin versus Sherlock Holmes. Kay explained that Sherlock Holmes appeared in Maurice Leblanc’s Arsène Lupin books, but was changed to Herlock Sholmes in later books Arthur Conan Doyle never granted permission to use the character.

He said that “there are some ideas circling around that” about the prospect of Herlock Sholmes entering the world of Lupin. Well, the fans would love to see that.

Part 2 ended with Hubert Pellegrini in cuffs, the late Babakar’s name cleared and Assane’s name also cleared of murder. The final scene of Part 2 saw Assane bid an emotional farewell to Claire and his son Raoul, with the police still looking out for him in several cases. Season 3 would likely pick up with Assane on the run.

In January, series creator George Kay indicated that we can expect “more conflicts and complications”.

Kay also told Metro that Part 3 would be something of a relaunch for the series. “It’ll be a fresh start in Part 3 with new characters, retaining a lot of the regular cast, but with a new branch of characters,” he said.

“It won’t be so focused on Babaker [Assane’s late father], even though he will remain an important, emotional crutch in his memory for Assane. It’ll be different stuff, and it won’t be so focused on Pellegrini.”
