GoT: House of the Dragon - Who will claim the Iron ThroneGoT: House of the Dragon - Who will claim the Iron Throne

The first season of GoT prequel House of the Dragon ends on a terrific note, leaving us spellbound. The first season focused on what happens following the reign of King Jaehaeyrs I Targaryen when King Viserys I takes the throne. The main agenda of the first season was who will claim the Iron Throne? Who will succeed Viserys? Will it be his brother, Prince Daemon? His daughter, Princess Rhaenyra?

After Viserys’s first wife, Aemma, dies, he names Rhaenyra his heir. But soon after, he remarries Alicent Hightower, and Alicent gives birth to sons, including Aegon, her eldest child. The court then divides itself into those who support Rhaenyra and those who support Alicent and her sons. It’s a battle between the ‘greens’, the princess party and ‘blacks’, the party of queen.

Season 1 ended with Aegon II Targaryen claiming the Iron Throne, when Viserys dies. The death of her son, Lucerys “Luke” Velaryon, at the hands of the unwilling Aemond Targaryen leaves Rhaenyra devastated and enraged. She is left with no choice but to go to war.

House of the Dragon is about the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, the events leading up to and covering the Targaryen civil war of succession, known as the “Dance of the Dragons”. The first season finale set up this deadly Dance of the Dragons.
