Festival Dating on the Rise in India

The likes of Navratri, Diwali and Dussehra have seen an increase in festival dating in India.

A nationwide survey by dating app Bumble reveals an intriguing trend as 63% of the Indians surveyed expressed their desire to find a partner during these festive occasions.

Festival dating is all about seeking a romantic partner during the festive season.

It is a time when many individuals want to share the celebrations with someone special by their side.

However, the nature and pace of these romantic connections can vary greatly from person to person.

The trend of festival dating emerged as the sight of other couples enjoying the festivities and sharing their moments on social media can sometimes make singletons feel lonely.

Festivals also bring certain societal and familial expectations, which can influence a person’s dating life.

But what is the preferred way for Indians to partake in these festivities when they are not in their native places?

It is indicated that 36% prefer to immerse themselves in the festive spirit alongside friends.

On the other hand, 27% enjoy festivals with their partner.

Eighteen per cent of respondents embrace the idea of seeking a date for the events that mark this period, especially when they are away from their hometowns.

For those already in relationships, the festival season holds unique importance.

Forty-eight per cent enjoy the shared experience of shopping while 43% enjoy selecting festive presents for those they care about.

Additionally, 42% cherish attending celebratory events with their partner.

Forty per cent are in favour of participating in traditional puja ceremonies as a duo or teaming up to adorn their homes with festive decorations.

Samarpita Samaddar, Bumble’s Communications Director in India, observed that festivals create a special environment where romantic emotions intensify.

During these times of widespread celebration, often punctuated by various overlapping festivals, participating in festive customs and traditions together allows individuals to understand each other on a deeper level and strengthen their connections.

She advised that individuals searching for connections online during the festival season put careful consideration into their profile bios.

Including details such as their preferred way of celebrating, the festival spots they enjoy, or their favourite festive dishes can be beneficial.

Identifying shared interests in these areas could lead to the beginning of a new relationship.

On the other hand, the survey revealed that 30% of Indians admitted to experiencing self-consciousness about their single status during this season.

Thirty-two per cent admitted feeling a sense of loneliness over the fact that they do not have a date to share the festivals with.

But this sentiment resonates more with millennials, with 32% acknowledging these feelings, in comparison to 28% of Gen-Z.

By recognising these emotional complexities, it’s essential to consider strategies that alleviate these feelings of loneliness and enhance the festival experience, whether one is single or in a relationship.

Giving advice to singletons, Bumble’s Relationship Expert Ruchi Ruuh said:

“Don’t feel pressured to date, instead consider dating on your own terms and timelines.

“Choose to date someone only if that person genuinely sparks your interest.

“You can enjoy the festival with or without a partner.”
