Created by Simon Barry, Warrior Nun is an American fantasy drama series based on Ben Dunn’s comic book character Warrior Nun Areala. The story follows a 19-year-old lady who awakens in a mortuary with a new lease on life and a holy relic embedded in her back. She learns that she is now a member of the ancient Order of the Cruciform Sword, tasked with combating demons on Earth and that strong powers from heaven and hell are out to find and control her.

The show debuted on Netflix on July 2, 2020, with mostly positive reviews. It was soon renewed for a second season that premiered on Nov 10, 2022. Fans are already looking for a third season, but will there be one?

Warrior Nun Season 3 Renewal Status

As on Nov 30, 2022, Netflix hasn’t either renewed or cancelled the series. However, a few inside reports suggest that Netflix isn’t keen to renew.

One of the big reasons that Netflix isn’t keen to renew the series is that the second season’s performance is below the mark. Netflix looks into multiple factors when it comes to renewing shows, and viewership is the most important. Netflix will look at cost vs viewership and the number of starters vs. the number of completions.

That’s the reason the creator Simon Barry requested fans to complete the series. He tweeted:

This seems to be determined by total @netflix views and full s2 completion rate, in the first 28 days. Simon Barry spoke to ScreenRant saying that they do have plans for future seasons saying:

“Of course, when you end a season as writers, you always want to make sure that you’ve not written yourself into a corner. And yes, we did have a notion about what season 3 could be and how that would look. But of course, it’s up to the fans. If they show up in big numbers. Netflix will make the right decision. And so hopefully, that’s what will happen.”

In another interview with Inverse, Barry is hopeful to have at least five to seven seasons to complete his story.

How well Season 2 performed on Netflix?

Season 2 debuted on Netflix on Nov 10, 2022. It debuted at rank 6 in week 1 with 26.22 million global hours. In its first week, it competed with biggies like The Crown Season 5 and Manifest Season 4. Season 2 remained in the top 10 globally in the second week as well with viewership growing to 27.7 million global hours. In the second week, it had to contest with most-anticipated releases like 1899 and Dead to Me Season 3.

In its third week, Season 2 managed to make it into the top 10 but the viewership dropped considerably to 11.9 million global hours.

According to FlixPatrol data, the show performs best in European countries, including Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, and Nordic regions. In the United States, it lasted for just eight days in the TV top 10s.

Warrior Nun Season 3 Release Date Speculations

As on Nov 30, 2022, despite showrunner Simon Barry looking set for future seasons and fan campaign efforts to drive viewership, Netflix hasn’t renewed the show. The steamer isn’t looking keen to invest in a show which has high production value and poor returns.

With hopes that Season 3 will get announced soon, don’t expect it to be on Netflix before 2024.

Warrior Nun season 3 is anticipated to go on and further explore the storyline from the previous season. It established that Ava and the Sister-Warriors of the OCS must discover a means to stop the angel Adriel from turning his followers into the world’s most powerful church.

Additionally, it is anticipated to continue from the last season, like how the first season ended, which left the audience eager to see what would happen next. In the concluding episode, the audience sees Ava travels to the other realm and returns with a new strategy to end Adriel’s sinister ruse. Still, it will require superhuman power and severe sacrifices.
