Top Gun: Maverick has reached a new landmark, as it topped $600 million at the international box office. This brings the Tom Cruise starrer to more than $1.2 billion worldwide, cementing it as Paramount Pictures’ ‘highest grossing film ever globally,’ as reported by Deadline.
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, the action drama is a sequel to Top Gun (1986) and the second installment in the Top Gun film series. The movie stars Tom Cruise as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell reprising his role from the original.
With $602.5M from 65 offshore markets, Top Gun: Maverick holds the number three spot for the production company’s highest titles ever in international markets. In 28 overseas markets including France, Australia, and the UK, it is Paramount’s biggest live-action movie ever.
Top Gun: Maverick is Paramount’s highest domestic (the United States and Canada) grosser of all time, surpassing Titanic.
Released in 1997, Titanic technically collected $659.3 million at the domestic box office including both its original run and several subsequent re-releases. It earned $600.8 on its first run, a number that has now been surpassed by Maverick.
Interestingly, it is Tom Cruise’s first movie that has reached $1 billion. His next-highest global earner is 2018’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which made $791.1 million.
Top Gun: Maverick was originally supposed to be released in June 2020. But Paramount held it till 2022 so that more people watch it in theatres after the pandemic. Released on May 28, the movie garnered incredible reviews from critics around the globe.
On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, Top Gun: Maverick has an exceptional score of 97% from 431 reviews. The audience score is 99% from more than 50K verified users. On IMDB, the Tom Cruise starrer has a superb rating of 8.6/10 from more than 233K votes.
