Sonic The Hedgehog (2020)

Sonic the Hedgehog is an action-adventure live adaptation of the video game series of the same name published by Sega. The movie follows Sonic (Ben Schwartz), a blue anthropomorphic hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds. He teams up with a town sheriff, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), to stop the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).

On Rotten Tomatoes, critics’ consensus reads: “Fittingly fleet and frequently fun, Sonic the Hedgehog is a video game-inspired adventure the whole family can enjoy.”

The movie has a fitting sequel with the name Sonic the Hedgehog 2 released in 2022.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider is a 2001 action adventure film based on the Tomb Raider video game series. Starring Angelina Jolie in the titular role of Lar Croft who traverses across the globe in search of two halves of an ancient artifact before the Illuminati can find it. Though the critics gave mixed reviews, the gamers community loved the movie and that’s the reason it was a major box office hit.  A sequel, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, was released in 2003.

Werewolves Within (2021)

Werewolves Within is a horror-comedy movie based on the video game of the same name from Red Storm Entertainment. Though not a typical video game movie, Werewolves Within is an interesting watch. The plot revolves follows a group of people in a small Vermont town who get trapped in a snowstorm with one of them suspected to be a monster.

Resident Evil (2002)

The first installment in the Resident Evil film series is an adaptation of the video games Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2. The movie follows senile heroine Alice who teams up with Umbrella Corporation commandos to stop the outbreak of the T-virus at a secret underground facility in Raccoon City. More than anything, it’s the plot of the movie that excites the viewers. The movie gracefully adapts the high-octane frightening survival gameplay.

The success of Resident Evil led to several sequels from Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004) to Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016).

Mortal Kombat (1995)

The first Mortal Kombat movie released in 1995 is our choice for the best video game movie to date. Adapted from the 1992 game of the same name, the movie follows a group of heroes who participate in the titular Mortal Kombat tournament to protect Earth from being conquered by evil forces.

The movie received tremendous praise for its martial art sequences, tone, and production values. Even after 27 years, the movie has retained its royalty value. Several follow-ups were released after the success of the first movie.
