Here’s Why Vikram Vedha and Bhediya Haven’t Premiered on OTT Yet
The viewership of OTT platforms has seen tremendous growth over the last three years. During and post pandemic, the box office numbers of theatrical releases were severely impacted. The audience was reluctant to go to theatres due to the fear of the pandemic and the poor quality of films. As a result, OTT platforms become a prime source of entertainment for viewers. This drove the filmmakers to reduce the window between theatrical release and OTT premiere from 8 weeks to 4 weeks. However, once things started to come back on track, the industry went back to its old rule from August 1, 2022.
The theatrical releases started to premiere on OTT only after the completion of 8 weeks in cinemas. Several Bollywood movies like Laal Singh Chaddha, and An Action Hero emerged big hits on OTT after failing at the box office. Two major Bollywood movies of the last year, Vikram Vedha and Bhediya, underperformed at the box office. Both of them received positive reviews but show how failed to make it big at the ticket window.
The viewers have been for these two biggies to premiere on OTT. There is no update on their OTT release dates even months after their theatrical release. A lot of discussions are taking place on social media on when these two biggies will arrive on OTT.
Vikram Vedha and Bhediya to premiere on Jio Super App
Now according to a report in Bollywood’s leading portal Bollywood Hungama, Both Vikram Vedha and Bhediya will be premiered on the new super-app of Jio.
A source told Bollywood Hungama, “Both Vikram Vedha and Bhediya will be premiered on the new super-app of Jio. This super-app is going to be launched soon and is sure to become a talking point. Along with the premieres of Vikram Vedha and Bhediya, it’s the app where IPL (Indian Premier League) 2023 will also be aired.”
Another source told the portal, “The idea is to premiere not just Vikram Vedha and Bhediya but also several other films. As per the plan, every week, there’ll be a film premiere. While some of these are theatrical releases, a few of them will get a direct OTT release. The list of all these films will be hopefully unveiled at the time of the launch of the super-app.”
As per a few reports, the new app will be called JioVoot but there is no confirmation yet.
Talking about Vikram Vedha, the gangster drama starring Hrithik and Saif in lead roles is an official remake of the 2017 Tamil film of the same name, co-starring R Madhavan and Vijay Sethupathi. It debuted in cinemas on Sep 30, 2023, and managed to collect around Rs 70 Crore.
Bhediya, on the other hand, had Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon in lead roles. Directed by Amar Kaushik, it premiered in cinemas on November 25, 2022. It is the third installment in Dinesh Vijan’s horror-comedy universe after Stree and Roohi.
