Heartland Season 16: Canadian drama Heartland returned with new episodes in October. Here’s everything that you need to know.

  • Heartland is the longest-running show on Canadian television, spanning 15 seasons and 234 episodes.
  • Season 15 of Heartland kicked off on CBC on Oct 17, 2021, and concluded airing on Dec 19, 2021.

Heartland is the longest-running drama on Canadian television. The popular drama series is about a girl who has inherited her mother’s ability to heal harmed horses. It follows the comings and goings of the Fleming-Bartlett family, particularly its gifted horse trainer Amy Fleming. The Canadian feel-good drama debuted on CBC way back in 2007. For 15 years, the show has been a refresher for millions of viewers across the globe. Heartland Season 15 concluded in Dec 2021 and since then the fans are wondering when will the next chapter air. Fans are eager to know about the future of the show as it has been a part of their lives for 15 years. Well, the good news for fans who have been waiting for Heartland Season 16.

CBC renewed Heartland in June 2022

The exciting news came for millions of Heartland fans in June 2022. On June 1, 2022, CBC officially renewed Heartland for Season 16. The announcement came almost exactly a year after the renewal of Heartland for Season 15.

This is a big relief for fans as the future of Canadian drama was looking bleak, especially with the decline in ratings over the past two seasons. Though Heartland is still going strong, the recent loss of a key character has resulted in a decline in ratings. One of the show’s core characters Ty Borden (Graham Wardle) died in the debut episode of the fourteenth season.

The sudden death of a core cast member and the show taking an entirely new direction isn’t something fans were prepared for. According to some reports, fans are still staggering from the death of Ty in Season 14. In fact, the series lost a significant number of viewers after Ty’s death.

Overall, Heartland still holds excellent numbers. The show has an impressive IMDb rating of 8.4/10 from 17k+ votes. Heartland has recently made it into the top three for the 2022 Canadian Screen Awards’ Cogeco Audience Choice Award! And that’s the reason CBC has renewed the show for another season.

  • Amber Marshall as Amy Fleming
  • Michelle Morgan as Samantha Louise “Lou” Fleming Morris
  • Shaun Johnston as Jackson “Jack” Bartlett
  • Gabriel Hogan as Peter Morris
  • Chris Potter as Timothy “Tim” Fleming
  • Jessica Steen as Lisa Stillman

One character that fans have been asking for is Georgie (Alisha Newton). Georgie is Lou and Peter’s adopted daughter and has been part of the series since Season 6. At the end of Season 14, Georgie travels to Florida with her boyfriend Quinn to train with world-class show jumpers.

In Season 15, Lou talks about Georgie but she doesn’t actually appear in any episode. Fans are wondering if Georgie (Alisha Newton) has left the show. Well, Alisha Newton is certainly active on Instagram. It seems that she is busy with other projects and has taken a break from Heartland.

The Heartland trailer teases what to expect from the new season. We see Lyndy being more engaged with horses, Tim trying to connect with his son Shane, and Katie running through a crisis.

Heartland Season 16 Plot & Synopsis

The official synopsis of the new season reads:

Season 16 of Heartland finds Amy and the rest of the family making bold strides towards their futures. For Amy that means taking the blinders off and looking at her life with renewed hope and focus. She’ll be challenged by the horses that need her help, but she’ll also open herself up to the possibility of new friendships and maybe even romance. Amy’s daughter, Lyndy, will follow in her mom’s footsteps as her talents with horses start to develop over the course of the season. Jack and Lisa will find themselves living out the dreams they’ve both worked so hard to achieve, but they’ll also realize that there are unforeseen consequences to dreams coming true. Just as Lou and Peter have recommitted as a couple, Katie will struggle to find her place in the world and in her family. Tim has never been happier in his marriage to Jessica, but a ghost from his past will force him to reconsider mistakes he made years ago and seek ways to atone for them.

Show’s leading lady Amber Marshall revealed in Graham Wardle’s Time Has Come podcast, that the scripts for Heartland are written two years in advance. It means the scripts for the next two seasons (16 and 17) are already there.

With two core members have already left the show, it would be interesting to see what lies ahead. One good thing about the show is that it gives hints about possible future storylines.

There were clues that Amy will find a new romantic partner and fully move on from Ty’s death. The prospect of Amy finding new love is exciting for many fans who have been feeling the absence of Ty these past two seasons.

Expect younger characters like Lyndy, Katie, and Parker to have more screen presence as they are the future of the show. The new season could introduce love interests for Katie and Parker.

If Georgie returns for the next season, we will see her competing in various tournaments including Olympics. Her equation with Quinn will also be one of the core plot points for Season 16.
