Dragon Ball Super (also known as Doragon Bōru Sūpā in Japanese) is an anime TV series based on the manga series of the same name. It is a sequel to the original Dragon Ball manga that began serialization in 1984. Written by Dragon Ball franchise creator Akira Toriyama and illustrated by Toyotarou, the manga series debuted on June 20, 2015.

Season 1 of Dragon Ball Super premiered on July 5, 2015, a month after the first volume of the manga was published. It received a tremendous response not only in Japan but in other countries as well. The first season had a remarkable run spanning three years and 131 episodes.

It’s been more than four years since the first season concluded airing. The fans are super excited and eagerly waiting for the second season of the anime series. Will there be Dragon Ball Super Season 2? When will it premiere? Here’s everything you need to know.

Will there be Dragon Ball Super Season 2?

The first season of Dragon Ball Super containing 131 episodes premiered on July 5, 2015. It spanned three long years, running till March 25, 2018. Fans were in for a treat when a special episode, titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly – Skytree Super, was released on November 1, 2018. On December 14, 2018, an anime movie titled Dragon Ball Super: Broly was released.

Since Dec 2018, fans are waiting for an official announcement about the next season. In March 2019, much to fans’ delight, some reports claimed that the next season would premiere in July 2019. However, Toei Animation, the producers, denied those reports. A Newsweek report in June 2019 confirmed that these were just rumors and that no new episodes were under production.

As things stand today, there is no official update regarding the second season of Dragon Ball Super. Well, the fans are disheartened and want to know about the future of the series. There is no need to get disheartened as popular anime shows usually take a long break between seasons.

A second “Dragon Ball Super” movie titled “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” debuted in theatres on June 11, 2022.

In a recent interview on the Dragon Ball website, Toei animator Florence Jay Dominguito discussed the franchise’s future, saying, “As a fan, I’m really looking forward to new movies and merchandise. I’m also excited about the new anime that will continue Dragon Ball Super.”

Well, that looks like an indirect confirmation that Dragon Ball Super Season 2 is in production. Moreover, the future of the franchise looks safe as Akira Toriyama’s ongoing manga series has continued the anime story with two brand new arcs after the Universal Survival arc.

Is there enough source material available for the second season?

The first season of the anime series adapted the first five volumes of the manga series. It concluded with the Universal Survival arc. The author Akira Toriyama has published 19 volumes across six arcs to date with the latest released on August 4, 2022.

  1. God of Destruction Beerus Saga (chapter 1 to chapter 4)
  2. Universe 6 Saga (chapter 5 to chapter 13)
  3. “Future” Trunks Saga (chapter 14 to chapter 26)
  4. Tournament of Power Saga (chapter 27 to chapter 42)
  5. Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga (chapter 42 to chapter 67)
  6. Granolah the Survivor Saga (chapter 67 — )

So, there is more than enough source material available for the Toei animation to go ahead with the second season.

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero movie released in June 2022 followed the events that take place after the Moro (Galactic Patrol Prisoner Saga) arc.

Dragon Ball Super Season 2 Release Date

At Jump Festa 2021, Toei Animation didn’t announce any plans for Dragon Ball Super Season 2. However, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero may open up new possibilities for a potential second season.

Considering that there is a lot of source material and the huge popularity of the Dragon Ball franchise, we would see the second season pretty soon. A second Dragon Ball Super was released on June 11, 2022, four years after Dragon Ball Super: Broly premiered in Japan.

So, we can’t predict the release date at the moment and can only hope that we will get it by the end of 2023.
