Vikram Vedha to Bholaa, let’s take a look at the recently released South remakes that tanked at the box office.

Ajay Devgn and Tabu starrer Bholaa hit the theatres on March 30, 2022. The remake of the 2019 Tamil blockbuster name Kaithi, Bholaa failed to make much impact at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 120 Crore, Ajay Devgn starrer is struggling and has failed at the box office with lifetime collections looking to be in the range of Rs 70 to Rs 75 Crore.

South Indian remakes have worked well for Bollywood in past but the formula seems to be failing now. Most of the South remakes released recently have tanked at the box office.

From Akshay Kumar’s Bachchan Pandey to the recently released Bholaa, let’s take a look at the recent list of South remakes that tanked at the box office.

Hit: The First Case

Starring Rajkummar Rao and Sanya Malhotra, Hit: The First Case was the Hindi remake of the 2020 Telugu movie of the same name. Released in July, the movie failed badly at the box office and managed to earn only Rs 9.1 Crore. That too despite good reviews and positive word of mouth.

Bachchan Pandey

Akshay Kumar and Kriti Sanon’s Bachchan Pandey is the official Hindi remake of the 2014 Tamil movie Jigarthanda, which was inspired by the 2006 South Korean movie A Dirty Carnival.

Akshay Kumar’s fans were expecting the movie to make it big at the box office. However, it failed to even cross Rs 50 Crore in its lifetime.

Nikamma

A remake of the 2017 Telugu film Middle Class Abbayi, Nikamma stars Abhimanyu Dassani, Shirley Setia and Shilpa Shetty. Released on June 17, 2022, it received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and audiences. It was a box office disaster with lifetime collections of Rs 1.77 Crore.

Jersey

A remake of the 2019 Telugu movie of the same name, Jersey got postponed multiple times due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It finally hit the theatres in April. Despite being a good movie, it failed big time at the box office. One of the reasons for its failure is the availability of the Hindi dubbed version of the original Telugu movie, which was as good as the remake.

Vikram Vedha

Despite incredible reviews, Hrithik Roshan and Saif Ali Khan starrer Vikram Vedha failed at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 175 Crore, Vikram Vedha failed to recover even half of its budget. One of the main reasons for the failure of the movie was the availability of the original movie in Hindi. The Hind dubbed version of the original is available on YouTube and MX Player.

Mili

Directed by Mathukutty Xavier, Mili starring Janhvi Kapoor is a remake of his own 2019 Malayalam-language movie Helen. Released in theatres on Nov 4, 2022, the movie was a box office failure with lifetime collections under Rs 10 Crore.

Bholaa

As mentioned above, Ajay Devgn and Tabu starrer Bholaa failed to make much impact at the box office. Made on a budget of Rs 120 Crore, the Ajay Devgn starrer is looking to wrap up its box office journey under Rs 80 Crore.
