Adam Azim vows to make ‘Big Statement’ in 2023

Adam Azim had a very successful 2022 and is now looking for an even bigger 2023.

The boxing prospect from Slough scored five wins, all by knockout, in 2022. His win against Rylan Charlton was particularly impressive as he stopped his usually durable opponent inside two rounds.

Azim admitted that 2022 was a big one but stated that he is only just getting started.

“I was definitely happy with 2022. I had a tremendous year, I got the spectacular knockouts I wanted.

“A lot of people are definitely excited about me fighting every time I fight now, so they’re expecting a knockout or a great performance.

“That fight (against Charlton) was one of the biggest statements for a prospect, to do it in style like that, because I’m pretty sure the previous fights that he’d had, no one’s ever done that to him.

“He’s been in tough fights, but power is what troubles a lot of people and he couldn’t cope with my speed early and he couldn’t cope with my power.

“But it was definitely a big statement, and I think there’s going to be more statements like that.”

Adam Azim prepares to face the unbeaten Santos Reyes at the OVO Arena on February 11, 2023 and is aiming for another early finish.

Although he is not looking past his opponent, Azim has the year mapped out in his mind.

He said: “I’ve got five fights again this year so I’m going to be on a busy schedule, and I want to be grabbing these titles with both hands.

“This year, it’s strap season for me, the Commonwealth, European, domestic titles as well, and even the world title level.

“I want to be stepping up soon in that way, probably the end of the year. Whatever my trainer says, I’m ready.”

Azim’s fast rise has impressed many and former European super-bantamweight Spencer Oliver says he is heading down the same path of success as ‘Prince’ Naseem Hamed and Amir Khan.

He told Boxing Social: “I said this in November after his victory over Rylan Charlton.

“That was the yardstick for me. That was the one that was going to tell me just how good he is, where he was at in his development.

“The way that he finished that contest, and as quick as he finished it, you know he’s the real deal.

“Once in a while, we get a talent that comes along that’s special.”

“We had it with Naseem Hamed back in the nineties. More recently we had it with Amir Khan, and this kid is on that sort of path.

“I think he’s as good as that. He could be the next superstar of British boxing without a doubt.

“I see the speed of Amir Khan in Adam Azim, and the angles and shot selection of Naseem Hamed.

“He throws shots from unusual angles and he’s got that one-punch knockout power. He’s got it all. He’s got the boxing IQ, he’s got the ring craft. He’s a complete package, and you don’t get that often.

“The only thing that we don’t know about him – we ain’t seen him tested.

“That’s because he’s that good, and you ain’t gonna find that out until he steps up to that level.

“He’s now 20 years of age, wants to win a world title before he’s 22, wants to win the European title by the summer.”
